Basic structure of CNC gantry milling machine

 The CNC gantry milling machine is mainly composed of a bed, a milling head, a longitudinal table, a transverse saddle, a lifting table, and an electrical control system.

It can complete basic milling, boring, drilling, tapping and automatic working cycles, and can process various cams, templates and mold parts with complex shapes.

The shape of the gantry milling machine is similar to that of the planer. The difference is that the beam and the column are not equipped with a planer tool holder but a milling tool holder with a headstock. The reciprocating motion of the longitudinal table of the gantry milling machine is not the main movement, but the Give motion, and the rotary motion of the milling cutter is the main motion.

The door frame is composed of columns and top beams, and there are beams in the middle. The beam can move up and down along the guide rails of the two columns. There are 1 to 2 milling heads with vertical spindles on the beam, which can move laterally along the rail of the beam. A milling head with a horizontal spindle can be respectively installed on the two columns, which can move up and down along the rail of the column. These milling heads can machine several surfaces simultaneously. Each milling head has a separate motor (power up to 150 kilowatts), speed change mechanism, operating mechanism and spindle components.

The movable span above the workbench is equipped with a gantry, which also includes a gantry carriage, which is movably clamped on the X-axis guide rail. The Z-axis guide rail is installed on the gantry. A cross beam is equipped with a Z-axis carriage, the cross beam is movably clamped on the Z-axis guide rail through the Z-axis carriage, and a Y-axis guide rail is also installed on the cross beam.

The servo device of the CNC gantry milling machine sends a control signal to the servo motor. The spindle motor rotates the tool, and the X, Y and Z-direction servo motors control the relative movement of the tool and the workpiece according to a certain path, thereby realizing the cutting of the workpiece.
